Net run rate

01

Runs scored per over faced minus runs conceded per over bowled, using the competition’s rule for overs when a side is all out.

Net run rate is the ranking number most club tables use after points. It rewards margin: a side that wins by a large score ranks above one that wins narrowly, even on the same points.

The calculation uses league totals, not a single match. Overs are counted as balls, so 4.3 overs means 4 overs and 3 balls, which is 4.5 overs for the arithmetic.

See the net run rate guide for a worked example and the all-out rule.

Questions scorers actually ask

01 Is a higher net run rate always better?
Within one league and one overs rule, yes. It is a ranking, not a score, so compare teams only on the same rule.
02 Do wides and no-balls count toward runs conceded?
Yes. Every run the bowling side gives away counts, extras included.
